A device that most of us would expect to see in use against terrorists, or pirates off the coast of Somalia has found it's way to political events and even a sand castle building contest.
The Long Range Acoustic Device is now in use by law enforcers in San Diego County.
The maker boasts of using it as a communications device, as well as for behavior modification. By pain.
I was not surprised to learn of the presence of the LRAD at two town hall meetings and a sand castle contest from WIRED Magazine. San Diego media types don't have a reputation for criticizing the police chief or County Sheriff Gore.
The story from WIRED
"The [Long Range Acoustic Device] was stationed by San Diego County Sheriff deputies at a recent town hall forum hosted by Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) in Spring Valley and at a subsequent town hall with Congressman Darrell Issa (R-San Diego)," East Country Magazine reported after reviewing official records. It was also parked at a local sand-building competition along the beach.
Other uses of the LRAD can include border protection, deterring birds in agriculture or at airports, and maybe annoying the Billionaire's for Wealthcare.
